About the Artwork
The Kanchi Vijay Pattachitra is one of the most captivating narratives from the sacred tradition of Odisha’s Pattachitra art. It illustrates the divine episode of Kanchi Vijay — the victory of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra over the King of Kanchi, as described in Odia legends and temple chronicles.
The story goes that King Purusottama Deva of Puri proposed marriage to Princess Padmavati of Kanchi. However, the proposal was rejected after the princess mocked the king for sweeping the chariot of Lord Jagannath during the Rath Yatra — an act of utmost devotion. Humiliated, the king declared war but was defeated. In despair, he prayed to Lord Jagannath for justice. Moved by his devotion, the divine siblings — Jagannath and Balabhadra — took to the battlefield in disguise and defeated the Kanchi army, ensuring Purusottama Deva’s ultimate victory and union with Princess Padmavati.
This hand-painted Pattachitra vividly captures that legendary triumph, blending devotion, valor, and divine intervention. Created on a traditional cloth canvas (Patta), the artwork is made using 100% natural pigments derived from minerals, stones, and organic materials. The borders are meticulously ornamented with floral and geometric motifs, while the central scene showcases the royal chariots, warriors, and the divine presence of the Lords.
Every brushstroke reflects the discipline and dedication of the artisan — often taking weeks or even months to complete. Originating from Raghurajpur, the heritage village of Pattachitra artists, this artwork is a fine example of Odisha’s timeless cultural identity.
Owning this Kanchi Vijay Pattachitra means owning a part of India’s living tradition — a masterpiece that celebrates faith, artistry, and divine storytelling in every detail.
