About the Artwork

The Rasalila Pattachitra is one of the most enchanting expressions of divine love in Odisha’s traditional art form. It depicts the celestial dance of Lord Krishna with Radha and the Gopis of Vrindavan — a moment where devotion, love, and the divine merge into one eternal rhythm. The word Rasalila literally means “the dance of divine love”, symbolizing the blissful union of the soul with the Supreme.

In this hand-painted Pattachitra, Lord Krishna stands at the centre, playing his flute, surrounded by beautifully adorned Gopis who dance in perfect harmony to the music of devotion. Their graceful movements and expressive faces convey surrender, joy, and spiritual ecstasy. The circular composition of the artwork represents the cycle of life, love, and eternal connection between the divine and the devotee.

Painted on traditional cloth canvas (Patta) using natural pigments derived from minerals and plants, this artwork is a fine example of the centuries-old craftsmanship of Raghurajpur artisans. The intricate borders, bold lines, and vivid colors are hallmarks of Odisha’s Pattachitra tradition, which has preserved sacred storytelling through art for over 900 years.
